Peace

Day 12

War is a crime against humanity. I am therefore determined not to support any kind of war, and to strive for the removal of all causes of war.

War Resisters’ International Declaration

Much of my activism is working for peace, and an end to all wars, opposing the arms trade and military conscription, and promoting peaceful ways of resolving conflict.

Since October 2023, I’ve been taking part in regular vigils calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. These have been happening every Friday lunchtime in central Edinburgh, and they’re organised by the activist choir Protest in Harmony.

Here we are singing Roses and Bread, a simple song, good for street singing, by one of our song leaders, Penny Stone:

The words are:

Roses and bread,
Roses and bread,
We all deserve safety and shelter
And roses and bread

We finally have a ceasefire in Gaza, but it is very fragile, and even if it holds, there has already been so much destruction and loss of life. Rebuilding shattered homes and creating enough stability and trust for a lasting peace is going to be a hugely challenging task. So we’ve decided that the vigil has to continue for the moment at least.

(We’ve been collecting donations for Medical Aid for Palestinians – they do great work, so send them a donation if you can.)
